“Page Not Found 404 Error” is occurred when

Visitors try to reach a non-existent page on your site

Visitors have clicked on a broken link

The page has been deleted

Visitors have mistyped a URL

A 404 page is called that because in response to a request for a missing page, webservers send back a HTTP status code of 404 to indicate that a page is not found.

If you have not customize the error page, Google Webmaster has released an “Enhance 404 pages” widget for you to create a custom 404 page with helpful suggestions instead of error messages.

What It Does

“Enhance 404 pages” widget adds a search box for your site with appropriate search suggestions and provides alternatives to incorrect URLs.

For an example. If a visitor misspell the URL http://www.example.com/news/recentt, “Enhance 404 pages” widget will display the following:

How To Implement It

Go to Google Webmaster Central

Select a site from the dashboard if you’re moderating multiple sites.

Clicking on Tools > Enhance 404 pages

Copy the JavaScript at the bottom of page, then paste it in 404.php

If you’re having a blog, I urge you to to custom your 404 pages with “Enhance 404 pages” widget for better user experience purpose.

I started this blog on January 2007. That was a time when most of my friends didn’t know how a blog is operated. Started up K-Director Dot Com wasn’t an easy task to me as there’s not much resources for me to learn how to begin a blog.

Researching and reading online had became my main resources to customize my blog and sharpen my writing skill. It was a tough path when everything was in dark, unsure, and scrabble.

Regardless you’re blogging for money or popularity, here’s some tips I believe they could show you a direction in blogsphere.

1. To Learn

Learning is a non-stop progress for a human. If you’re new in blogging, there are many things you should put some efforts for new knowledge. What should you know? A question you may doubt about.

How does a web hosting server work

How does a domain work

How to purchase a domain and web hosting

How to pick a good domain name

How to choose a suitable web hosting

How to moderate your cPanel

How to install WordPress

Customize WordPress theme

Install WordPress plugins

If you plan to make money from your blog, learn how does Google Adsense work

What is feed/RSS and how to burn your feed

How to use Google Webmaster and Google analytics to moderate your website

2. To Master

After you’ve a clear mind of what to learn, master them. Exercise of what you’ve learned and apply them on your blog. At the same time, start to blog and learn from the other bloggers. Writing skill is a key for better user experience.

Master how to apply text format – bold, italic, header, more

Master how to use images to beautified an entry.

Master how to write a good title.

Master SEO

Master good and original content

Master persistency

Master consistency

Master sharing is caring

3. Just Do It (Action)

Yes. For new startup bloggers, please settle down what is your preferably niche for your blog. Don’t be fickle minded and too greedy to write everything under sun.

On and off bloggers are not welcomed by Google Bot. So, just blog and write for good content.

4. Return

I believe after a blogger has goes through the above 3 steps, he/she will certainly will get some returns from blogging. It’s either returns in term of money or popularity.

Return always comes after efforts. This is for sure.

As a conclusion, Learn-Master-Action-Return is a natural cycle I have seen in blogsphere. How many blogs have been created every minute and how many blogs have been abandoned at the same time because don’t understand the cycle?

I spent 5 minutes to upgrade this site from WP 2.5.1 to 2.6 with the WordPress Automatic Update plugin. If you’re having a WordPress blog, I recommend you to try this plugin out.

Back to WordPress 2.6. Some interesting features have been included in WP 2.6 and I think it’s worth to have a mention.

Theme Previews

Template changes can never be so easy. WP 2.6 makes your templates or entries reflects immediately on your site, with no need for regenerating static pages.

Word Count

Remind me of the my degree thesis.WP 2.6 now counts the words for us.

Image captions

A small caption will be placed underneath an embedded images.

I know video talks louder than words. This video will explain some of the new features better.

One more thing, I upgrade my WordPress blog for the sake of security issue too.

Theme Compatibility

No reports of any broken themes was found in this upgrade. New optional capabilities like Gravatars was added.

Plugins Compatibility

Plugins that work with the admin may require updating to take advantage of the new. It’s always better to deactivate your plugins before upgrading for WP 2.5 RC 2 and let the built-in updater notify and give you one-click upgrades to plugins you have installed. Here is a list showing that which plugins work great and which don’t, compiled by the community.

Download and test WordPress 2.5 RC 2

If you’re interested in testing the latest WordPress version, you can download and install Release Candidate 2 of WordPress 2.5, and then, remember join the testers mailing list to report any bugs found.
My advice: BACKUP!

Appearance is the very first impression given to your visitors. That’s why I concentrated in re-designing K-Director.com in phase 1.

In phase 2, I have implemented Search Engine Optimization changes for K-Director.com. I will be talking more about the SEO plugins needed and elements to attract more traffics to this (your) blog.

Robots Meta Plugin Installed

This plugin allows you to add all the appropriate robots meta tags to your pages and feeds and handle unused archives in order to prevent indexing unnecessary pages.
If you have no idea on how to write a robot.txt, this plugin might be your savior.

After you install this plugin, you will find this code <meta name="robots" content="noodp, noydir" /> in your site’s source code.

[Download Robots Meta Plugin]

Added ‘Link’ Tag

A “link” tag defines a URL of some other related page. It does not display anything or cause anything to happen by itself, it’s just metadata defining some other related page.

The “rel” attribute defines the relationship of that page to this one.

The rel=”archives” is defining pages where the content on this page will be seen in the future.

To create the archive links in your own page, add this to your theme’s header.php file:
<?php wp_get_archives(‘type=monthly&format=link’); ?>

Installed All in One SEO Pack Plugin

This is a highly recommended plugin for your blog. It controls the 4 most important on-page ranking factors and how they are addressed – Titles, Descriptions, Keywords and Duplicate Content.

This SEO pack is designed to give you the best options out of the box. Moreover, it’s editable and you have the full control of it.

[Download All in One SEO Pack Plugin]

Reinstalled Similar Post Plugin

‘Related Post’ or ‘Similar Post’ is always another alternative to provide your readers a convenient method to read your other posts. It makes an infinity post circle for your readers to stay longer in your blog.

However, I faced some technical problems when installing “Related Post Plugin”. Therefore, I am now using “Similar Post Plugin”for the same purpose. Both of these plugins search your content’s keywords and then display similar posts which match your keywords.

(I have installed it but not yet really spend time on designing it to make it outstanding yet.)

[Download Similar Post Plugin]

Installed MyBlogLog and BlogRush

I have installed MyBlogLog and BlogRush at the bottom of this blog.
For your information, MyBlogLog is a blogger community that is based in part on interactions facilitated by a popular web widget that many members install on their blog while BlogRush is a “Cooperative Syndication Network” that rewards its users for their contributions to the network.

In coming phase 3, I will focus more on changes that monetize my blog.

The progress of re-building K-Director.com is kind of slow after 3 working days. I don’t deny that this re-structuring progress is as slow as like a tortoise. But I did have a real job and real deadline for my real project. Moreover, people like to say that “Quality things made with patient”.

OK. Less bullshit. Now talk about what I have done so far for my blog. If you’re going to start a new blog, this might be a good guide for you. At least, I re-design this site after 9 months of blogging. I know where to start correctly. It helps you to create a less mistake and more effective blog.

1.	New Theme
As you see, this is a new theme for K-Director. This theme comes with 3 columns + 1 bottom row. At the top and bottom of sidebar, it merges 2 columns to 1 column. So I can insert a bigger size of widget up there and bottom there.
The font’s color, size and types have been changed too.
You can look for a free theme at http://themes.wordpress.net/.

2.	New Tagline
I edited my tagline from “Download, Tech, Web, Make Money Online, Tips” to “Experience Web 2.0, Make Money Online, SEO, Blogging, Technology, Tips” and so does my home page title tag. The reason is simple. These tags are the contents I am going to focus on from now onwards. After 9 months of blogging, I finally know what I interested at. So, continue writing what I like is something can motivate me to maintain this blog.

3.	New Google Custom Search
I am now using Google Custom Search. No more big big Google Search box at the top middle of my blog. The new Google Custom Search has been placed at a corner and I feel it fits my blog perfectly.
Google Custom Search allows user make money from its search result too. If you have no idea how to create a Google Custom Search for your blog, Dosh Dosh has a great post on how to set up Google Custom Search And Make Money.

4.	New Comment Field
I installed WP-Grins plugin and TinyMCEcomments plugin to beautify my comment field. Now you can use a WYSIWYG editor on the comment field and at the same time, clickables smilies provided. And of course, you can subscribe my post comment via Subscribe To Comments plugin.

There’s still a lot to work at. Hopefully I can brief you more in phase 2.
If you have question about my rebuilding process, leave me a comment.
