Google-Motorola Deal: What’s so Promising about It?

Google Motorola

Google recently bought Motorola Mobility Solutions (MMI) for $12.5 billion. There have been rumors that HP, Dell and Microsoft too interested in the buyout. Being Google’s largest acquisition till date, it is a strong strategic move.

The deal is expected to supercharge the Android ecosystem. Google was already insecure due to the buyout of thousands of Nortel’s patents by Microsoft and Apple. The deal will give Google access to a large base of Motorola’s patents.

Why Motorola?

Motorola Patents

Motorola has been an innovator in the mobile phone segment and has 17000 patents, with another 7500 pending. Notably, Google’s Android platform for phones had been facing patent infringement threats from Microsoft and Apple.

The deal offers much more than just patents. It is a strategic move from Google that will be a boost to the Android platform as well as to its users. Buying out a mobile vendor paves the way for standardized implementation of Android on smart phones and other devices.

Android OS

Android

After Apple, Google is expected to become the leader in the space of mobile gadgets. The developers can now use Motorola devices for reference while developing Android apps. While Apple continues to focus on innovation, Android is already the market leader in mobile OS platform.

Motorola has been a market leader in the segment of set-top boxes and home-based entertainment. The Motorola deal could be a key in reviving Google TV which couldn’t become a success despite all its hype. Motorola has a major stake in the set- segment that delivers television and apps through a high-speed data connection.

Google might go for pre-installation on cable boxes that would make it a mainstream dealer in this market. It would not need to make fresh deals with the content owners and cable providers for this pursuit. Google might become a part of the traditional pay TV industry in the immediate future.

Motorola was the first to roll out an Android based tablet, Xoom Honeycomb. With Google getting access to Motorola’s tablet and its proven record with innovation and quality software, we might just witness the next tablet war between Apple and Google.

HTC, Samsung, Sony Ericsson

The deal is expected to affect HTC, Samsung and Sony Ericsson that partnered with Google to make Android-based devices. This, in turn, might benefit Microsoft and Blackberry in the way that the partner manufacturers might shy away from Google in the future. Google has learned from Apple that to stay longer and profitable in the market you must own the entire domain which essentially includes the hardware as well as the software in the mobile industry.

Conclusion

The deal is expected to change the mobile landscape in a big way. Mobility is expected to take the center stage in the future of computing and Google’s buyout of Motorola will cement its position in the computing business. Whether Google will benefit in the television segment from this deal is yet to be seen, but the deal surely provides it with the platform and resources to make the next move.
