Sometimes, it's a shame as for some softwares, even if you've found the correct symbol from the Character Map or you've pressed the correct key combination short cut, the text that appears may just be some rectangular shape thingy.

Under the Character Map tool, if you have the Advanced option selected, you can search for what symbols you want. Well, I am not a symbols guru to tell you what are the names of all the symbols that you can find in your computer, but for example, if you type "Degree" in the Search field, it'll just show you that symbol. Do note that this may not work for all fonts (eg Symbol). Try it with, say, Century Gothic, and you will see what I mean.
